An Adventure Back in Time

I hope the title isn’t too deceiving, as this post isn’t about traveling back in time to Hill Valley, California with Marty McFly in Back to the Future; it’s about our visit to Leavenworth, Washington a few years ago.

Leavenworth is found in the beautiful state of Washington. Nestled in the mountains and surrounded by the Wenatchee National Forest, this town of 2,000 residents has a lot of character and a lot to offer. As soon as we arrived, I felt as though we had traveled back in time because of the atmosphere and the theme throughout town. The streets are lined with hanging flower baskets, and the buildings are built with Bavarian décor and flair. The intricate detail of the wood-work on almost all of the buildings provides a wonderful backdrop as you stroll through downtown.

The Blackbird Lodge was our home-base during our visit. Located a block away from the center of downtown, it proved to be a great central location for exploring, and the glass elevator within the lodge gave way to the beautiful river and wooded-scenery below.

During our visit, we spent many afternoons and evenings walking around this charming town; we would scope out dinner locations and do a little shopping along the way. One of my favorite stores in Leavenworth is called the Cheesemongers Shop. Filled with cheeses from around the world, we sampled some of the available choices and then found our favorite cheese: Applewood Smoked Cheddar from England. It is to die for! I love cheddar and the smoky flavor throughout the cheese was the perfect complement. One afternoon, we purchased half a pound of this delicious cheese, as well as some crackers, and wine, and then searched for a perfect place to devour our afternoon snack.

Leavenworth River (Sorry about the quality, I didn’t have the best underwater camera back then)

The Leavenworth River flows right through town and provides the perfect opportunity to take a break from shopping. I don’t remember what company we booked the river float with, but it didn’t seem too expensive at the time.

Because Leavenworth is nestled in the mountains, you are able to capture amazing views from almost every street within the city. We spent our time floating the river, shopping, hiking, playing miniature golf, sampling the beer, and much more. A weekend in Leavenworth will give you the chance to unwind and feel like you stepped back in to time. If only for a little while…

  1. I was just up in Washington and haven’t heard of that place. But loving all things German, I wish I had! I guess it gives me something to think about next time.

  2. We stayed in Leavenworth for a few days during an anniversary trip 10 years ago and loved it. Fantastic hiking trails! Thanks for taking me on a little trip down memory lane. 🙂

    1. That is so neat! The mountains were amazing, weren’t they. I guess my “Adventure Back in Time” applies to more than just myself, the town, and Back to the Future. 😉 I’m glad you were able to reminisce a little as well. Have a great evening and thanks for reading!
