Travel Tips Thursday–Writing It All Down

I received a journal last year as a bridal shower gift and I instantly knew that it was the perfect opportunity to start writing down my thoughts and feelings while on vacation.

This gift would become my vacation journal.

A year later, I can’t even begin to tell you how happy I am that I decided to start a travel journal. It has been on all of our vacations since we have been married and I try to take a few moments each day to write a little something: what we did, how we felt, what we ate…those little moments that may be forgotten years from now.

Every so often I will pull out the travel journal and read about our different vacations. It’s fun to see how much we’ve done in one short year, and it’s also fun to relive those feelings and memories (especially on those cold winter nights when I’m reading about our tropical paradises).

Do you have a travel book or a place to write down your experiences on vacation? What about a daily journal about life in general?

  1. Nice post and a great thought. I don’t personally keep a travel diary but I do keep a scrapbook which contains sentiments such as tickets, receipts, I even keep small currency that I can stick to the pages, anything that I experienced that reminds me of the place. Its something that is a little more personal to me and then of course I share the rest on the blog 🙂

    1. I think a scrapbook is a great idea. I’m going to have to start doing that. Right now, all those small little items end up in my travel filing cabinet with the rest of my travel documents. You have a much better way!

  2. I’ve never been a journal keeper until a few years back when I sailed across the Atlantic and was given a moleskin journal by my parents. With nothing much else to do for hours on end on the open ocean I diligently wrote every day. It’s so true that their are thing we forget and it’s great to go back and read it again years later and remind yourself of details you had forgotten. Now I don’t travel without one and despite enjoying blogging, I’m old school and like writing with pen and paper while I travel and digitizing later.

      1. On the spur of the moment I said yes to doing a yacht delivery (having never sailed before) from Cape Town to Miami. It was an amazing seven week adventure that I’ll never forget. Want to one day get round to writing it up as a blog.

  3. I also use apps like 4 square to record where I’ve been and will write a note or 2 on my phone. I like to use my camera to take pictures and use my phone to record stuff I really want to keep a note of.

  4. What a great idea. Somehow I’ve never been able to maintain a journal while traveling but I easily write everything I’m feeling in my letters to friends. I would definitely love looking back at what I was feeling though.

    1. Thanks for reading, Cassie. Maybe you could take a picture of the letters you write and then upload those pictures once you get home. I don’t know if the resolution would be good enough to read the letters… but it’s worth a try. 🙂

      1. I do do that sometimes because I fear my main journal will be burned up or lost or something so when I write something particularly important I do take a photo – but that is EXCELLENT advice. I guess last time I really went traveling I just wrote all about it here on the blog, but then you’re always thinking about people reading and it may not all be EXACTLY as you felt. I know that now after blogging about my life in Australia for 7 months and then when I got home I was like IT WAS NOTHING LIKE THIS WHAT AM I EVEN SAYING! bah!

  5. This is such an amazing idea! I wish I had been doing this all along… I am definitely going to start do this!! Ps I love your handwriting haha!

    1. Thanks, Jordan. 🙂 Some days when we get back from a full day I’m exhausted and would rather fall right to sleep, but I always make myself write down something. And once we are back home, I’m grateful that I did. 🙂 (BTW, I haven’t forgotten about your blog award, I will have something posted next week!)
